Description

M*CARBO Heavy-Duty Recoil Springs are Combat Ready to repeatedly take a pounding yet show remarkably consistent performance every time a round is fired.

In general, heavy loads need heavy springs and lighter loads need lighter springs. There is no hard and fast rule as to how much "Spring" a pistol needs. Too light a spring and the pistol opens and closes early and hard, increasing the felt recoil and battering the frame. Too heavy a spring and the slide is hard to open and may not cycle completely, jamming the pistol.

What is the correct 1911 recoil spring weight for your 1911 pistol?

  • The proper recoil spring weight for a 1911 pistol is dependent on the caliber and length of the barrel.
  • It is advised to tune your spring weights based on the type of loads you prefer to shoot most often. If you shoot mostly lighter loads, use lighter 1911 recoil spring weights and conversely if you prefer heavier +P loads use heavier 1911 recoil springs.
  • For all-around reliability try recoil springs in the middle like the 16lb Recoil Spring.
  • If your pistol fails to lock back on the last round after installing a new recoil spring, you may need to try a lighter weight spring.

  • .45 ACP 4”: 18-22#
  • 9mm 5”: 10-12#

The recoil spring in a 1911 pistol is an important part of overall function in autoloader reliability. The primary purpose of the recoil spring is to allow the slide to move back far enough to strip a cartridge from the magazine during the feeding process and stop it just in time to prevent the slide from excess battering to the frame during operation.

M*CARBO makes the Best 1911 Recoil Springs because they are carefully wound from the finest American Spring Steel right here in the USA! The finest ordnance-spec spring steel to give you long-lasting durability and resistance to heat and deformation over time. They have been thoroughly tested and will maintain a consistent spring weight during long-term use.

Even though M*CARBO makes the Best 1911 Recoil Springs you can buy, we recommend changing your recoil springs at regular intervals to optimize your pistol’s performance and enhance reliability.

When is it time to change your 1911 Recoil Spring?

  • If you start getting failures to return to battery while feeding, it may be an indication that your recoil spring is losing some of its overall length. Typically, compact pistols will require more frequent length recoil spring changes than standard pistols.
  • Any easy way to check for a worn spring is to compare your recoil spring versus a new spring of the same weight and brand. If your spring has lost approximately one-half an inch of overall length, it is time to replace your spring. You should always have extra recoil springs of your desired weights on hand.
  • Any time you buy a second-hand or older 1911 pistol, it is a good idea to bring all unknown poundage springs back to factory spec for reliable operation. New, quality springs are a cheap insurance policy against malfunctions and pistol damage.
  • If your ejection or extraction pattern suddenly changes, you may have a weakened recoil spring.
  • 1911 recoil spring direction is universal and can be installed either direction.

Recoil springs fit over your handgun's guide rod and control how the slide functions. In general, heavy loads need heavy springs and lighter loads need lighter springs. A spring that is too light can cause the handgun to open and close early and hard, increasing the felt recoil and battering the frame. A spring that is too heavy can cause the slide to be hard to open and could even keep the gun from cycling completely, jamming it.

Keeping a fresh recoil spring in your pistol will dramatically reduce the pounding wear your slide and frame receive. These enhanced ASTM Spring Steel 1911 Recoil Springs resist taking a set even after thousands of compression cycles for improved performance and reliability over standard music wire springs. They are the top choice of competition shooters seeking the longest in spring life.
