Description
The birth of the first transcontinental railroad was celebrated when the symbolic “Golden Spike“ clanged under the ceremonial mallet at Promotory Summit, Utah on May 10, 1869. And in 1969, Winchester, honored the 100th anniversary of this historical event with the Golden Spike Commemorative Carbine. This unique firearm was authorized by the Golden Spike Centennial, Celebration Commission, the Union Pacific, and South Pacific Railroads.
The carbine features a straight grip stock and forearm of American walnut. The barrel band and magazine bands are gold plated. The round barrel is inscribed with “Golden Spike Commemorative”. The sights are hooded front and semi-buckhorn rear.
The gold plated receiver is engraved on the left side with a railroad spike flanked by the dates “1869” and “1969“. The saddle ring is blued. The right side is roll engraved with border scroll. The upper tang is inscribed with “Oceans United By Rail“.
Struck by the U.S. Mint, the official centennial medallion depicts the meeting of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific engines at Promotory Summit. The medallion is embedded in the right side of the buttstock.
The serial number, with the prefix “GS”, is located on the front underside of the receiver. 69,996 were produced at New Haven.
